One Year Later, Long Term Effects of 2017 Wildfires
A recent NBC News report illustrates a number of long-term effects that residents affected by the 2017 wildfires are experiencing. According to the report, just under a third of the 3,000 homes destroyed in Santa Rosa have been rebuilt, as many families have temporarily left Santa Rosa or have permanently relocated.
According to an article by the Napa Valley Register, roughly 75 percent of those who lost homes in Napa County aren’t yet ready to rebuild based on the number of permit applications submitted. Santa Rosa City Schools may reportedly lose over $4 million in funding as attendance has not returned to pre-fire levels.
Santa Rosa hopes to help fund its recovery by passing a bond, but the initiative has drawn some criticism, as it will utilize money from residents’ parcel taxes.
Time Magazine has also issued an article on the recovery effort in Coffey Park, describing the Coffey Strong group, which is an informational resource for Coffey Park residents affected by the wildfires. One issue the Time article illustrates are issues rebuilding, including dealing with updated building codes.
