PG&E Ordered By Public Utilities Commission to Develop Wildfire Plan

PG&E and five other electric companies were ordered by the state Public Utilities Commission to prepare detailed wildfire mitigation plan.  According to a report by the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, the mandate calls for a twenty-point plan to be in place by the middle of 2019.

The Press-Democrat reports that the five-member Public Utilities Commission approved the order on October 25, requiring PG&E, Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, and three other utilities to file plans to “prevent, combat, and respond to wildfires.”  The requirement stems from a bill signed by the Governor in September 2018.  Both the law and the PUC order spell out specific items that must be included in the mitigation plans, including strategies to “minimize the risk of electrical lines and equipment causing catastrophic wildfires, including consideration of dynamic climate change risks,” vegetation management, and shutting off parts of power systems during emergencies.
